IUI Treatment : Helping Couples Achieve Parenthood

The fertility treatments which involves the placing of sperms inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate easy and sure fertilization is known as IUI (intrauterine insemination). The main aim of IUI is to increase the number of sperms which reach the fallopian tubes and also to increase the chance of fertilization.

IUI provides an added advantage to the sperm by giving it a head start. But the sperm has to reach and fertilize the egg on its own. It is a comparatively less complicated and less expensive option when compared to in vitro fertilization.

When is IUI used?

  • Unexplained infertility
  • A severe cervical condition
  • Scars on the cervix from the past procedures may hinder the sperms ability to enter the uterus
  • Ejaculation dysfunction

IUI Procedure

Before IUI, a few ovulation stimulating medications are made use of. Later careful and continuous monitoring will be done to determine when the eggs are correctly mature. The IUI procedure will then be performed during the time of ovulation, typically about 24-36 hours after the increased levels of LH hormone which indicates that ovulation will occur soon.

A catheter will be used to insert the sperm directly into the uterus. This process increases the possibility of conception by increasing the number of sperms that are placed in the uterus. The IUI procedure consumes only a few minutes and involves minimal discomfort.

How successful is IUI?

The success of IUI depends on several factors. If a couple has the IUI procedure performed every month, success rates may reach up to about 20% per cycle depending on different aspects such as female age, the reason for infertility and the use of fertility drugs.

When To See Your Gynaec?

Usually we think of a gynaecologist visit only in relation with pregnancy. It is not to be so. In a time when female infertility rates stand at about 10% of the total world population, a better awareness of one’s reproductive health, is the need of the day.

Although a regular gynaec check-up is advisable to all women above 21 years, it is not a feasible option in most households in our country. However, keeping a close watch on our body for irregularities and consulting a gynaecologist, in case of any, could compensate for it.

Most of us are confused about when to see your gynaec? Here’s a guide to help you overcome that dilemma.

Reasons to Consult a Gynaecologist

It is always better to be safe than sorry. Even if you feel it’s a false alarm, get yourself checked-up to be on the safe side. The symptoms that needs an expert attention are as follows: -

Abdominal Discomfort – though abdominal cramps and pain can occur due to digestive problems as well, the chances for a reproductive system issue cannot be avoided. Severe, unbearable and persistent pain needs attention as they may be caused due to conditions like endometriosis and so on that can affect fertility.
Pelvic Pain – pelvic pain can be a sign of conditions related to pelvic inflammation disorders or prolapses. Persistent pelvic pain symptoms need to be checked out by a qualified doctor.
Irregular periods – though irregular periods are common in adolescence, in a woman, they can indicate an irregularity that could affect her fertility. The irregular periods symptoms include abnormal, heavy or light bleeding, missed periods, menstrual cycles spanning less than 21 days or greater than 40 days, bleeding in between cycle or after menopause and so on.
Soreness or unusual discharge from genital area – theses could indicate an infection and needs to be checked up at the earliest.
Urinary and bowel movement irregularities – these could symbolise pelvic problems which needs to be treated early.
Infertility – an inability to conceive successfully after regular unprotected intercourse for a year indicates some irregularities in fertility and needs medical assistance.

IVF- Directs You To A Beautiful Hope

In-vitro fertilization is the fertility treatment that is performed in the laboratory. It uses special medical techniques. In IVF, men’s sperm and woman’s egg are fertilized in laboratory. The main aim of this treatment is to treat women with damaged fallopian tubes. It is the common reproductive technology used. Recently this treatment is used as fertility treatment for women with endometriosis, unexplained infertility or in male fertility problems.

IVF is prefered, if you and your partner are diagnosed for factors which include Low sperm count, antibody problems that harm sperms or eggs and problems with ovulation. In vitro fertilization has 4 stages :
  1. Ovarian stimulation : Ovarian stimulation drugs is used for stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. After 8-14 days, another drug is used for nourishing egg maturation.
  2. Egg retrieval : For retrieving the eggs, ultrasound-guided probe is inserted to the vagina by the doctor. A needle is then used to suck liquid from a small gland (follicles) and lot of eggs are retrieved.
  3. Fertilization and embryo culture : In this stage, maturity and quality of the eggs are evaluated. Eggs which are selected after evaluation are transferred into a closed apparatus in which small babies are placed. Then inseminated with sperm, either by injecting a single sperm into the egg or by placing sperm together with the egg.
  4. One or more embryos are implanted in the uterus following egg retrieval (after 1 - 6 days). Excess embryos may be frozen and saved for future use. It takes about 2 weeks to determine if pregnancy has been achieved.
It is not necessary that all IVF cycles should result in pregnancy and then in live births. Certain variables which may even include the age of patients makes the success rates of IVF highly depended. Some women are even subjected to acupuncture which may increase the chance for pregnancy.

What is IVF ??

IVF (in vitro fertilization) is the process of combining an egg with the sperm in a laboratory dish. Later, embryo is transferred into uterus. Main intention of this treatment is to treat women with damaged fallopian tubes. Advancement of this treatment increases the live birth rate. Now a days, IVF is used in male infertility problems and also in the fertility treatments for women with endometriosis (it is a disorder, when a tissue grow outside the uterus)

4 Steps of IVF Process :

Ovarian Stimulation: In this step, women take drugs for the stimulation of ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
Egg Retrieval: For retrieving the eggs, the doctor insert an ultrasound-guided probe into the vagina. Then, a needle is used for draining the liquid from the follicles (small gland), and several eggs are retrieved.
Fertilization and Embryo Culture: Sperm is collected from the donor or partner. Active sperm is mixed with the eggs in the chamber. And sperm and eggs are moved into the incubator ( small apparatus used for placing the premature babies are placed) and monitor to confirm that healthy embryos are developing.
Embryo Transfer and Cryopreservation: Healthy embryos are selected for the transfer. A speculum (a medical tool for checking the openings in the body such as anus or nostril) is inserted into your vagina for the transfer. With the help of a small plastic tube which is placed through the cervix into uterine cavity, embryo are transferred.
